Moon Ritual
Tools:
Four elemental candles
Mabon related incense of your choice (6 sticks approximately)
One god/goddess candle (red or orange in colour)
One sage stick incense
Ritual:
1. Those who wish to participate in the ritual should be kept out of the
area or room which will be used for the ritual. No pep talk or anything
should be spoken to those who will be involved in the ritual. Let them
mill around and talk to others at their leisure. The presider should
then cleanse the circle area in whatever fashion is appropriate to their
traditional path.
Oh, Lord you have died and begun your path to the interim and you have
taken with you the essence of everyday earthly life and the physical
realm. I ask you to breathe your life which is waning into this
candle’s fire on this night in remembrance of all that you have given
us since your birth in the Winter and growth over the Spring and your
fullness in the summer. I ask you to bless us this night with the power
of your waning spirit so that those who participate in this ritual on
this magickal night may come to understand the essence of the night and
the essence of the balance of life and death during this harvest time.
Oh, Lady as I speak of balance I call to you on this full and glorious
night so that you may come and breathe the fire of your understanding
and wisdom into this candle’s flame. May you honour us with your
presence as you begin to change into your Crone aspect and the mother is
waning. Yet as we know just because you are changing faces does not mean
that your mothering aspect has disappeared. Come on this night and guide
us through this ritual. We ask you both to come bear witness on this
night to this magickal rite.
The presider should then light the God/dess candle which is orange or
autumn in colour. It can be a votive in size or oil if you would like.
Next the presider should take the incense and group it together and
stick the end into the flame of the God/dess candle to light it saying:
I ask the powers of the flame of the Gods to light this incense so that
this physical and earthly space may now be transformed into the essence
of the Gods and that it may become a sacred and holy spiritual plane.
May all who enter this place breathe into them this scent which shall
awaken their spiritual side and open their mind’s eye to the world of
the Gods. We ask of you spirits of the air to manifest with this smoke
this space so that we are safe, aware and calm to better understand the
meaning of this magickal rite on this full moon night.
The presider should then lightly blow out the flame and then walk
clockwise around the circle cleansing the space in whatever fashion is
to their liking. Once one full circle has been made the presider should
the drop (if possible) a stick every so often to seal the outside of the
circle and mark the ritual area of the circle. More than likely the
stick will go out on its own; however, if you have enough incense
holders stop and place them there to burn out.
2. The presider should then return to the altar which is the God/dess
candle set in the dead center (or best you can) of the circle. The four
elemental candles (or votive) should be placed near the candle in the
center in their appropriate place. Facing the southwestern corner the
presider should pick up the sage stick and then using the God/dess
candle light the stick.
On this night, these people who have gathered here have come on a quest
which is not conscious nor foremost in their minds in their everyday
life. I ask that when the cross into the realm of the spiritual that
they reclaim their spiritual quest and understanding for this magickal
rite safe within this sacred plane.
The presider should then move to where the doorway is for those who wish
to enter into the circle. The presider should motion to those who wish
to join the circle form a line.
3. Each person should be greeted the same way using the following
format.
Hello. (Taking their hand)
Welcome, I ask you do you come here on this night of your own free will?
Since you come of your own free will then why do you come here on this
eve?
As you enter this circle on this eve, by what name do you wish to be
known?
I ask you now to step forward one step and to close your eyes so that
you can leave behind you all of your worldly troubles for one brief
moment. Close your eyes and breathe deeply.
As they stand there pass the incense from head to foot and make the sign
of the pentacle over their feet and their head. When done, then take
their hands and say:
Keep your eyes closed and do not be afraid. Concentrate on my voice and
the sounds of the earth around you.
Grab their hands and lead them around the outside of the circle just
inside the incense sticks. Make one full circle slowly then jog or run
as best you can the second time still hold their hands. Then when you
feel like it stop at a point suddenly. Make sure that they don’t fall
over and hold then still for a moment. Say to them:
With this last turn, you leave the physical realm and are in a sacred
and safe place called the spiritual realm. Your soul belongs here and
you are calm and with this turn come to reclaim your natural beliefs and
ways.
Spin them around once and then say:
Breathe in and out. Deeply and calmly. Do not open your eyes till I tell
you. Do not be afraid and be calm. This is your personal time with the
Lord and Lady. Be assured that they are here with you now on this sacred
journey of the soul.
4. When the last person has entered the circle, the presider should
return to the center and say the following:
On this eve you have come here to honor the Lord and the Lady. You have
come here to understand and build upon your growing awareness of an
internal connection to the earth around you. I ask you now to silently
call to yourself the elementals as I call them to this magickal rite on
this night.
Going to the red candle first:
I call you fire Lords and Ladies to the circle on this night first. We
have grown and developed under your great fires this summer. This past
season you have guided and misguided our ventures. We ask that on this
night that you provide us with the strength of your powers so that we
may make this venture successful. We ask that you bless us on this night
and honor us with your presence.
Lighting the candle. The presider should then go to the green candle.
Oh, elements of the Earth we ask you to come on this night to take care
of the physical vessel which holds our immortal souls. We ask that you
honor us this night by your presence for it is the physical realm which
the Lord is leaving and we must come to terms with during the coming
season of our lives.
Lighting the candle, The presider should then go to the yellow candle.
Oh, elements of the Air of the essence of the spiritual realm. We ask
that on this night you bless this magickal rite with your presence so
that we will come fully into the spiritual plane in both mind and body.
We ask that since this is a spiritual venture that you guide and protect
us on this night so that we can come to terms with that which the
Goddess feels we as her children must learn. We hope that you will honor
us with your wisdom and grace this circle on this night.
Lighting the candle, the presider should go over to the blue candle.
Oh, elements of the water of Balance. We ask for your presence last on
this night because you are the true essence of this spiritual quest. You
are the calming and soothing nature of the Gods which aids us in gaining
new understanding about ourselves which we sometimes do not wish to know
or understand. We ask you to come and honor us this night with your
presence and ask that you watch over and guide us this night. We ask
that you flow into our souls and drench our thirsts during this magickal
rite.
Lighting the candle, the presider should then go over to someone on the
edge of the circle to begin the bulk of the ritual.
5. The presider should go behind each person and speak softly into their
ear saying:
I ask you know to keep your eyes closed and sit or lay down in the spot
which you are in. It works better if you kneel or sit Indian style. Keep
your eyes closed and breathe deeply.
6. When the last person has sat down, the presider should find an open
spot on the circle and sit down also before continuing. Take a few deep
breaths and calm yourself from all that walking around.
Now, breathe into your lungs the essence of all life. Mind your
breathing and the sound of my voice. Think deeply into the recesses of
your souls. I ask you to concentrate on your breathing on this night and
on your own soul.
Pause. Allow them to breathe.
Calmly now I ask you think into to deepest parts of your souls, what do
you think about death. How do you envision death?
Pause.
Continue your breathing. Thinking about death should not scare you nor
effect your breathing pattern. Think calmly about the subject and how
you feel about it. What words come into your mind?
Pause.
Death is simply a stage. It is pattern of the cycle of life and the
pattern of the earth and her cyclical nature. I ask you to think about
the God as he like you will at a later date pass from this existence to
that of the realm of the interim. In this place you will gain all the
past life memories and the understand of the trials and tribulations
which you have undergone in this life time. Think about the joy of the
understanding and wisdom.
Pause.
Concentrate on your own reaction and to those of the God who enters now
into that realm. For one brief moment on this night you are riding in
his pocket and crossing into that realm. Your soul sees what you truly
feel at this point in your development how you feel about Death and
dying. Think about this sudden revelation.
Pause.
Place your hands on your knees. Your right hand on your right knee and
your left on your left. Concentrate on this aspect of dying and death
which your soul believes to be true. Now take that revelation and form a
word which describes this belief. One word and single sound. It can be
in any language or it can be a descriptive type word. And utterance
which means something to your soul. Choose this word carefully and
honestly. Think calmly and hard. When you found your personal and
special word then close your right hand into a fist.
Pause till everyone has a fist of their right hand.
Now I want you to slow turn over your right hand so that when you open
your fist the palm will be facing the sky. As you turn your hand over
imagine the energy from this word manifesting itself into a ball. An orb
if you like. As the energy grows, the orb will become heavier in your
hand and more solid. It can be any colour and any size. So I ask you now
to open your hand slowly as the orb takes form and the word becomes
manifest in the spiritual and physical realm of your body during this
magickal rite.
Pause.
Now imagine as the orb’s energy begins to flow out of its boundaries
and up your arm and over your lap. It grows like a quick clinging vine.
It grows over your body taking control of every pore and every cell of
your body and being. It’s energy is cool fresh and revitalizing in
nature. You are become renewed and refreshed. Concentrate on this
transformation from the orb to your spiritual body.
Pause.
I want you now to bend forward as far as you can so that you become like
the orb. Rest your head on the ground if you wish. Feel yourself
becoming like the orb and one with all that is around you.
Pause as they all bend forward. Wait till a few seconds after the last
person has bent forward.
Now slowly raise your body back to its original upright position.
Slowly, remember to breathe in all the essence of life around you at
this moment. All that comes from your word. From your orb.
Wait till the last person is upright.
Now I want you to imagine a source of energy deep within you which is
the opposite of this energy which flows throughout your body at this
time. It is all the energy of the word which is the exact opposite of
the one which you have chosen. Think long and hard about this opposite
word. I ask you now to pull all that opposite energy into your left
hand. Place your palm open facing the sky to catch this energy. Place
all those feelings and energies into the left hand forming another orb.
The stronger the energy gets the heavier and more solid the orb gets.
Concentrate on this.
Wait a little while.
Now concentrate on that energy being sucked from your very soul. You
need to live in the present my friends. The Goddess believes that the
present is the most important part. This negative or opposite energy
which you now have placed into your palms is the energy of the past. The
wasted energies of your lives. I now ask you to imagine this orb in your
hand as you raise the palm over your head and throw it back over your
shoulder out of the circle. Concentrate on releasing that which in the
past has kept your stagnate. Remember that when it leaves your palm you
are refreshed and reborn in the present.
Wait till all have down this.
Now place your hands together. Imagine the energies which are residual
from both aspects of your beliefs and fears and hopes and dreams are
being balanced. You must remember that the good and the bad are equally
needed in your life’s journey and the growth of your soul. Be balanced
for it is not how you dwell on life’s ups and downs but on how you
deal with them. Concentrate on this union.
Wait as they do this.
Now breathe deeply and thoughtfully. Think about what these words have
meant to you and what they shall mean to you in the future. Concentrate
on your own reaction to them. I ask you to now breathe a few more
moments. When you are ready to reenter the realm of the physical say
both words out loud at what ever volume you wish and then open your
eyes.
Wait till the last person has opened their eyes.
7. As you are shaking out your hands and arms, does anyone have any
announcements?
8. Wait until they have settled down and then close the circle. Ask
those nearest each elemental candle to extinguish them and then ask a
couple, same or different gendered to exist the God/dess candle. Then
banish the circle and thank the participants for coming to ritual
